The Art of Ballast: Mastering Weight & Trim
Weighting is not a "set and forget" task; it is a skill that takes time, practice, and fine-tuning to master. Proper weighting is the foundation of effortless buoyancy and a rock-solid horizontal trim.
1. The "Balanced Rig" Goal The objective is to carry the minimum amount of lead required to hold a decompression or safety stop at 3-6m with an almost empty cylinder (30–50 bar) and an empty wing. If you can stay neutral here, you are perfectly weighted.
2. Soft Weights vs. Hard Weights
- Soft Weights (Lead Shot): These flexible pouches conform to your body or the shape of your trim pockets. They are significantly more comfortable for weight belts and reduce the risk of "hot spots" or bruising on the hips.
- Hard Weights (Molded Blocks): Ideal for threading directly onto a 2-inch webbing harness or using in specialized V-weight systems for twinsets. They stay exactly where you put them, which is critical for fine-tuning your center of gravity.
3. The Oceanauts Environmental Standard You will notice we only stock Coated or Encapsulated lead.
- The "Why": Raw, uncoated lead oxidizes in salt water, releasing lead carbonate into the marine environment. To protect our local reefs and wrecks, we exclusively use weights with a tough, protective coating that prevents leaching and keeps the lead where it belongs.
4. Fine-Tuning Your Trim Weighting isn't just about how much you carry, but where you carry it.
- Heavy Feet? If your fins are sinking, move small 1kg trim weights to your top tank band to shift your center of gravity forward.
- Heavy Head? If you feel like you're "lawn-darting" forward, move weight down toward your waist or use a tail-weight (P-Weight).
Academy Note: Mastery of trim is a game of centimeters. Small adjustments to your weight placement will yield massive improvements in your gas consumption and comfort.
