From the Desert to the Geopark: Earning Your SSI Instructor Rating in Ireland

By Dain McParland, SSI Instructor Trainer & Founder of Oceanauts Diving

Oceanauts Founder in the UNESCO Geopark

In 2008, I took my first breath as a dive pro right here in Ireland. At the time, I didn’t realize that breath would lead me on a fifteen-year journey across the globe; from the cenotes of Mexico and the blue waters of Greece to a decade-long career as the Dive Safety Officer for New York University Abu Dhabi.

Diving has given me a career that is more rewarding than I ever imagined. It has introduced me to my closest friends and taken me to corners of the planet most people only see on screens. But in 2023, I felt a pull back to the East Coast of Ireland. I decided to leave the corporate safety of the UAE to build something of my own: Oceanauts Diving.

It was the biggest test of my resolve to date, but I don’t regret it for a second. Today, we have a thriving community of divers in the heart of a UNESCO Global Geopark. And now, for the first time in Northern Ireland, we are opening the Oceanauts Pro Academy to train the next generation of SSI Professionals.

If You Can Teach Here, You Can Teach Anywhere

"The tropics are a beautiful escape, but the Geopark is a true training ground, and an incredible adventure."

There is a unique badge of honor that comes with being a "Cold Water Instructor." Our temperate waters are teeming with life, dramatic drop-offs, and wrecks. It is genuinely one of the most rewarding and fun places to dive on Earth. But it is also dynamic, and it shapes you into a profoundly better diver.

Planning a dive here requires a level of precision that you simply don’t learn in 30°C water. Take a simple skill like deploying a DSMB. Launching a buoy from 30 meters on a spool while wearing thick neoprene or dry gloves, in limited visibility and Irish currents, requires a level of manual dexterity and composure that takes real practice to master.

It takes a bit more effort than waltzing in off the shore any time of day in Dahab, but it is that extra layer of planning and effort that makes our dive pros shine. When you train in the Geopark, you aren't just learning to tick boxes. You are mastering your craft while having an absolute blast. If you can execute a perfect, fun training session here, you can do it anywhere on Earth.

The Art of Intelligent Progression

In the era of "Internet Diving," there is a lot of dogma about how to teach. You’ll hear people say you should "never" teach on your knees. At Oceanauts, we believe the hallmark of a great instructor isn’t following a trend—it’s patience and empathy.

Mastery of neutral buoyancy is our ultimate goal for every student, but every diver's journey is different. We use every tool available to us to help a student succeed. Sometimes that means a staged progression; sometimes it means extra time on the platform. We don't rush. We coach. We understand that some people take longer than others, and we have the patience to get them there safely.

More Than a Course: A Mentorship in the Geopark

When you join the Pro Academy, you aren’t just a student on an ITC. You are joining a community.

Life at Oceanauts is about the "Giant Spirit." It’s about the deep-dive theory sessions at HQ followed by the most important part of the day: the Irish debrief. There is nothing quite like sitting in the local pub over a pint of Guinness, dissecting the day’s diving, and sharing stories with a team that values camaraderie as much as safety.

We are looking for candidates who want to be more than just "card-carrying" instructors. We want professionals who want to help this sport grow.

How to Join the Academy

Because I am personally invested in the success of every instructor who carries the Oceanauts name, I do not offer "instant booking" for our Pro programs. We keep our cohorts small to ensure you get my full attention as an Instructor Trainer.

I want to know your story, your goals, and your "why." We start every application with a 15-minute Discovery Call. It’s an informal chat to see if our Academy is the right fit for you.

Are you ready to stop "following" and start leading?
